Challenges in Leadership and Ethics: Case Studies

Participants may choose one of the following cases for small-group discussion, facilitated by the faculty and staff of the Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership, and the Department of Leadership, Ethics, and Law at the U.S. Naval Academy. Each case provides an in-depth illustration of unique challenges faced in both leadership and ethics. “The MV-22 Osprey” and the “EA-6B Aviano Case” are featured in the Naval Academy's core course on ethical leadership, taught to all midshipmen. All four cases, including the two additional cases on defense procurement, are taught by the seminar leaders to senior Navy and Marine Corps officers participating in the “Flag University” seminars offered by the Center for Executive Education at the Naval Postgraduate School (Monterey, CA).

E1: The MV-22 Osprey
Vice Admiral Michael Haskins

A leading aircraft manufacturer has a large inventory of unsold jumbo jets. The U.S. Air Force urgently needs a new fleet of super-tankers. A high-ranking Air Force procurement officer has a creative way of solving both problems at once.

E5: Powerful Leadership: Inspire the Leader Within
Jennifer Mounce, SPHR

Problem - In this business age where everything is available and transparency is expected and required, it is crucial for managers and leaders to be transparent with themselves. Many managers out there still think it is okay to "not tell the whole truth", to "shelter their employees". Many managers still think there can be a division in their personality between work and who they are at home. What they fail to realize is their employees see right through it. Employees leave managers not companies. In this day and age, organizations can no longer afford to have people leave because they have a bad manager.

Solution - In my executive coaching practice I have supported many managers and leaders who have come to realize that they, for various reasons, have abdicated responsibility of leading their own life. When they work through a process of becoming a better leader of themselves they inherently become a much stronger and better leader of others.

Growing Leadership Capacity

Barry Conchie
Principal Leadership Consultant
The Gallup Organization

What are the innate talents of leadership? What aspects of leadership can be taught? Understanding this difference is important to everyone who believes that leadership matters. What we might describe as "character" and what we see in a person's behavior need to be understood and interpreted through what is innate and what is teachable. With a global leadership talent database of 45,000 people drawn from the higher levels of private and public companies, non-profit and government, this presentation will:

  • describe how to define and measure innate leadership talent
  • explain the research into the kind of workplace culture and performance management that enables the best leaders to flourish
  • identify a researched framework for accelerating leadership growth and development
  • identify the key components of effective leadership succession planning
